From The Chaser and The Wailing to Hope: The Cinema of Na Hong-jin English · Français · Tiếng Việt

Na Hong-jin’s Cinema: A Director Who Films Human Misjudgment, Not Evil

Few Korean filmmakers have built such a vast cinematic universe with so few feature films.

Na Hong-jin’s feature filmography consists of The Chaser (2008), The Yellow Sea (2010), The Wailing (2016), and Hope (2026). All four films were selected by the Cannes Film Festival, and Hope entered the official Competition in 2026.

Na is commonly described as a master of thrillers and horror. That description is accurate but incomplete. Crime, horror, shamanism, bodily violence, alien invasion and rural mystery are the visible surfaces of his work. Beneath them lies a more consistent philosophical question:

Can human beings recognize the truth before it is too late?

In Na Hong-jin’s films, evil does not triumph simply because it is powerful. Evil triumphs because institutions react too slowly, witnesses misunderstand what they see, and frightened people believe the explanation that best fits their prejudice.

The Chaser: A Society That Cannot Act on the Truth

The Chaser reveals the killer relatively early. Its suspense therefore does not depend primarily on discovering his identity. The real tension comes from watching the police and the protagonist repeatedly fail to transform knowledge into effective action.

The murderer survives not because he possesses supernatural intelligence, but because the system surrounding him is fragmented, bureaucratic and slow. Police officers waste time, evidence remains insufficient, and institutional responsibility matters more than the life of a victim.

The film’s true horror lies in preventability.

A person who might have been rescued is lost because every individual and institution arrives slightly too late. Seoul becomes a moral labyrinth: crowded, illuminated and apparently modern, yet incapable of seeing the violence taking place inside it.

The Yellow Sea: Borderlessness as Existential Exile

In The Yellow Sea, the border between China and South Korea is more than a geographical boundary. It represents a condition of permanent exclusion.

Gu-nam belongs fully to neither country. He is a worker, a debtor, a husband, a migrant and a potential murderer, but none of these identities offers security. The more desperately he tries to return to a stable life, the deeper he enters a world in which motives, alliances and information continually shift.

Violence in The Yellow Sea is exhausting rather than glamorous. People fall, miss, bleed, stumble and struggle to breathe. Killing resembles physical labour rather than cinematic choreography.

Na refuses the fantasy of efficient violence. A weapon does not instantly solve a problem. Violence produces fatigue, confusion and further violence.

The Wailing: The Horror of Choosing the Wrong Belief

The Wailing is the clearest expression of Na Hong-jin’s cinema of uncertainty.

A stranger arrives in a rural village. Soon, mysterious illnesses and murders spread through the community. A policeman named Jong-goo attempts to protect his daughter, but he cannot distinguish reliable evidence from rumours, religious symbols, racial prejudice and supernatural terror.

Who should be trusted?

The Japanese stranger?
The shaman Il-gwang?
The mysterious woman in white?
The police?
The Church?
One’s own eyes?

The film repeatedly forces the audience to choose and then destabilizes every choice.

Its deepest horror is not the possible existence of a demon. It is the impossibility of knowing whom to trust while time is running out.

Jong-goo’s love for his daughter does not give him moral clarity. His fear contaminates his love, and urgency makes him vulnerable to manipulation. He acts because he must, but he acts before he can know.

The audience is trapped in the same structure. We judge the stranger through appearance, nationality, rumours and disturbing images. In other words, the film does not merely show prejudice. It makes the viewer participate in it.

Why Evil Remains Unexplained

Many contemporary thrillers explain evil through trauma, childhood abuse, social discrimination or revenge. Such explanations can deepen characterization, but they also make evil intellectually manageable.

Na often refuses that comfort.

His villains and mysterious beings do not provide a complete psychological confession. The violence in his films cannot be reduced to a single cause. This lack of explanation is not a narrative defect. It is central to his worldview.

Real victims rarely receive a complete explanation. Survivors seldom understand the total system that destroyed their lives. Na’s cinema preserves that painful incompleteness.

Time Always Arrives Too Late

Delay is one of the essential structures of Na Hong-jin’s films.

The police arrive after the decisive moment.
The truth becomes visible after the wrong choice.
Evidence becomes meaningful only after it can no longer save anyone.

His characters are not completely ignorant. They possess fragments of knowledge. The tragedy occurs because partial knowledge must be used under extreme pressure.

Na’s world is therefore not a world without information. It is a world overwhelmed by incompatible information. This makes his cinema especially relevant to the digital age, in which rumours, images, conspiracy theories and contradictory claims circulate faster than verification.

Space as a Labyrinth of Perception

The urban alleys of The Chaser, the borderlands of The Yellow Sea and the mountains of The Wailing all function as labyrinths.

To become lost in these spaces means more than losing geographical direction. It means losing the ability to distinguish ally from enemy, evidence from rumour and salvation from destruction.

Na’s protagonists are lost inside their own interpretations before they are lost in physical space.

Hope: From Rural Horror to Cosmic Fear

Hope, Na Hong-jin’s first feature after The Wailing, premiered in Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The science-fiction thriller features Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender and Taylor Russell. It follows a remote Korean community confronted by mysterious extraterrestrial beings. Na has also said that he has already developed a story for a possible sequel.

At first, alien invasion may appear to represent a dramatic departure from Na’s earlier work. Yet the philosophical structure remains familiar.

What happens when a community encounters an unknown outsider?
Does humanity attempt understanding before declaring hostility?
Does fear originate in the alien being, or in the human interpretation of difference?

In The Wailing, the outsider is culturally, nationally and religiously unfamiliar. In Hope, otherness becomes literally non-human. The scale expands from a village nightmare to cosmic science fiction, but the central concern remains perception under pressure.

Na Hong-jin Among Korea’s Great Auteurs

Bong Joon-ho often examines systems, class and institutional architecture.

Park Chan-wook frequently organizes desire, revenge and guilt through elaborate visual form.

Na Hong-jin concentrates on epistemological panic: the terror of not knowing what is true.

Bong’s characters are trapped inside structures.
Park’s characters are trapped inside desire.
Na’s characters are trapped inside misjudgment.

Na never grants the audience a permanently secure position. Every interpretation may be revised. Every apparent truth can become another trap.

Conclusion

Na Hong-jin does not simply make films about evil.

He makes films about the failure to identify evil correctly.

The Chaser examines institutional misjudgment.
The Yellow Sea examines the collision of incomplete information, money and survival.
The Wailing examines religious and emotional misjudgment.
Hope expands the problem toward humanity’s response to the radically unknown.

The most frightening figure in Na Hong-jin’s cinema is therefore not necessarily the murderer, the demon or the alien.

It is the human being who becomes certain before possessing the truth.

By the time that certainty collapses, someone has usually already died.

The Chaser révèle assez rapidement l’identité du meurtrier.

The Yellow Sea : vivre sans appartenir à aucun territoire

Conclusion

The Chaser raconte l’erreur des institutions.

Ông đã đạo diễn bốn phim dài: The Chaser năm 2008, The Yellow Sea năm 2010, The Wailing năm 2016 và Hope năm 2026.

The Chaser tiết lộ danh tính kẻ sát nhân khá sớm.

The Wailing: Nỗi kinh hoàng của việc tin nhầm
